Can you put lead-based paint debris in a dumpster?

Covers: Lead-based paint debris (home renovation)

Usually yes

Short answer: Usually yes for household renovation debris, as long as it's contained. Wrap or bag it so the dust stays put.

Why

EPA allows residential lead-based paint waste from homeowners and contractors in C&D landfills and MSW landfills (2003 rule, EPA530-F-03-007). Household waste is also excluded from federal hazardous-waste rules (40 CFR 261.4(b)(1)). Contractors under the RRP rule must contain renovation waste to prevent dust release, store it in containment, and contain it during transport (40 CFR 745.85(a)(4)).

What to do with them instead

Mist and bag or wrap debris in heavy plastic. Hire an RRP-certified contractor for pre-1978 homes. Check state rules (some are stricter).

What changes by location

  • state/local: some jurisdictions add requirements
