Can you put dried latex paint in a dumpster?

Covers: Dried latex paint (solid in the can)

Usually yes

Short answer: Usually yes, once it's completely solid. Instructions for the can differ: some programs say leave the lid off so it's visibly dry, others say seal it and bag it, so follow your hauler's rule.

Why

Dumpsters.com says most areas allow dry latex paint if the sealed can is wrapped in a plastic bag. King County (WA) allows dried or solidified latex in the trash with the lid off. Pennsylvania DEP says dried latex can go in the trash.

What to do with it instead

Recycling at PaintCare sites is still preferred where it's available.

What changes by location

  • local: lid-on vs. lid-off instructions differ (Dumpsters.com: sealed and bagged; King County: lid off)
