Can you put oil-based paint in a dumpster?

No

Short answer: Never. Oil-based paint is household hazardous waste.

Why

Pennsylvania DEP says oil-based paints, stains and varnishes are hazardous and should go to HHW collection. Dumpsters.com and Bagster prohibit paint. EPA counts paints among household hazardous wastes.

What to do with it instead

HHW collection, or a PaintCare drop-off in PaintCare states, which accept oil-based paint.

States with paint recycling (PaintCare) programs

PaintCare operates in 12 states + DC; NERC 2020 counts 16 states with paint disposal bans (liquid paint).
